GY95 CIO awarded grant by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to share the history
and culture of BMX, skate and urban sports in North East Lincolnshire
Today, GY95 CIO is announcing a £104,970 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund
to engage young people in collating and sharing the heritage and culture of BMX, skate and
urban sports in North East Lincolnshire. The project will involve the urban sports community
in developing future plans for GY95 and the wider community.
GY95 CIO turns 30 this year and is the leading group in North East Lincolnshire dedicated
to providing a wide range of urban sports facilities for young people. Without this funding
from The National Lottery Heritage Fund their history, the stories, memories and the culture
will be unheard.
The project aims to engage young people and urban sports enthusiasts in uncovering the
rich history of GY95, providing young people with new skills, experiences and local
connections. The project will create a documentary film about urban sports in North East
Lincolnshire, produce a book, host memory sharing sessions and research sessions, host a
30 th Anniversary Jam and end the project with a Film Premier and Exhibition.
Volunteers, local groups and people from all over the UK will be able to take part in the
project through events, workshops and social media allowing more people to enjoy and play
a part in North East Lincolnshire’s cultural heritage of urban sports.
In the long term, the project will enable GY95 to build the skills of young people and new
volunteers, strengthen the networking within the Urban Sports scene in North East
Lincolnshire and develop a 5 year business plan so GY95 can continue to expand and
develop facilities for young people into urban sports in North East Lincolnshire.
GY95 will be hosting weekly research sessions, monthly Memory Sharing Sessions and will
have a website where people can share their stories. The website will be launched via
GY95 social media pages and this will promote the different activities that people can get
involved with. The biggest event will be the 30 th Anniversary Jam taking place on 12 th , 13 th
and 14 th September at GY95 Trails on Taylors Avenue, Cleethorpes.
Joel Robinson Chair Person from GY95 CIO said: “We are thrilled to have received this
support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to money raised by National
Lottery players we can engage young people in the telling of our story and how we have
arrived at this point, 30 years of digging, riding and skating. We are really looking forward to
hearing our history from other people’s points of view and capturing the 30 years of Urban
Sports development in North East Lincolnshire.”
